What Walmart Marketplace is
Walmart Marketplace is Walmart's third-party seller platform. Walmart.com launched it in August 2009 with a selected group of retailers, adding close to a million items to the site at the time, and later widened applications. It operates mainly in the United States, with marketplaces in Canada and Mexico, and it sits inside a retail business whose stores, pickup and delivery network shape what sells.
How sellers get in
Onboarding is review-based rather than open registration. Walmart assesses business history, catalogue fit, fulfilment capability and compliance record, and a US business presence with a tax ID is expected for the US marketplace. Approval is not guaranteed and refusals are not always explained, so sellers prepare trading history, product documentation and shipping plans before applying.
What is measured
Performance is scored on on-time delivery, cancellation rate, valid tracking, contact response time and listing quality. Accounts that fall below the thresholds receive warnings, lose search and buy box exposure, and can be suspended with payouts withheld.
Fulfilment choice changes the promise shown to the customer. Walmart Fulfillment Services is optional, but WFS listings carry shorter delivery windows, which affects conversion in categories where speed decides the sale. Sellers fulfilling from their own warehouse carry the same on-time target with less control over carrier performance.
Rules that carry legal weight
Seller verification covers entity, tax and bank data, and the information has to match across documents. High-volume US sellers fall under INFORM Consumers Act disclosure, and state sales tax is collected by Walmart under marketplace facilitator laws.
Product rules follow US consumer safety law: CPSC requirements for children's and consumer products, certification where a category demands it, and Walmart's own restricted-product list. Intellectual property complaints are handled through the platform's brand portal, and repeat findings end the seller relationship rather than a single listing.
Commercial structure
Walmart charges a referral fee by category and no monthly subscription. Advertising, WFS storage and delivery are separate line items. Because the marketplace competes on price against Walmart's own retail offer, sellers watch the buy box and the price comparison rules as closely as the fee table.
