What SHEIN is
SHEIN is a fast-fashion and lifestyle retailer that traces its start to 2008 and began selling online under its own domain in 2012. It sells its own label through shein.com and its apps to customers in more than 150 markets. Its supply model runs on small initial production batches with restocks following real demand, which keeps inventory exposure below that of a conventional apparel retailer and lets the catalogue turn over quickly.
The marketplace layer
SHEIN Marketplace opened in Brazil in April 2023 and was announced as a global integrated marketplace in May 2023, then extended to the United States, Mexico and European markets. Third-party sellers now sit alongside SHEIN-branded goods, first in fashion and later in home, beauty, electronics accessories and seasonal categories.
Two seller types use it. Local sellers hold stock in the destination market and ship domestically. Cross-border sellers ship from origin. Both are subject to listing standards, image and copy rules, and category restrictions, and both compete on the same product pages as SHEIN's own supply.
What is enforced
Listing and IP control. Design copying is the main complaint category in fast fashion. Takedowns follow rights-holder reports, and repeat findings affect the seller account rather than a single listing.
Product safety and EU compliance. GPSR requires traceability and a responsible person, EPR registration applies per member state for textiles and packaging, PPWR adds packaging recyclability and labelling duties as it phases in, and the Digital Services Act sets transparency and notice obligations for very large platforms, which flows down to sellers through listing and reporting requirements.
Seller verification. Entity documents, tax identity and bank account are checked at onboarding, and branded or regulated goods need authorisation or certificates before they can be listed.
Cost and cross-border treatment
SHEIN charges commission by category and settles in the currency of the marketplace. Cross-border sellers also carry destination import cost: IOSS for low-value EU consignments, duty on higher-value shipments, and US tariff treatment after the de minimis route closed. Because fast fashion sells at low unit prices, a small change in landed cost moves the sellable price band more than it would in a higher-ticket category.
